When you've got a busy site that has some sort of method for allowing visitors to register and log-in it can be useful to know how many people are online at any one time, or who is online. The idea for this article came from having read an article by Mike Bernat that demonstrated how to show the number of people online.
After recently having seen a way of showing the number of people currently visiting your site by recording IP address I thought I'd demonstrate my own way of doing it that also includes the ability to show which users online, and number of users/guests online.
It's not too complex to get it working, and if you're using Wordpress there's already plugins out there that does this!
