Project Honey Pot

A can of SPAM luncheon meat

Spam is a horrible thing, unless it comes in a can. For many years now it's not been safe to list your email address on any sites without it resulting in a mass of spam arriving in your inbox. This though, might be about to change if this new project called "Project Honey Pot" has anything to say about it.

Project Honey Pot is the first and only distributed system for identifying spammers and the spambots they use to scrape addresses from your website. Using the Project Honey Pot system you can install addresses that are custom-tagged to the time and IP address of a visitor to your site. If one of these addresses begins receiving email we not only can tell that the messages are spam, but also the exact moment when the address was harvested and the IP address that gathered it.

Their software, when installed on your server, will help collect the IP addresses of miners that look for email addresses within sites with the purpose of sending spam emails. What might also be useful is that they list some of these IP addresses on their site too. One thing concerns me though and it's that it might not actually be too reliable due to IP spoofing and dynamic IP addresses.
