Many moons ago I mentioned with some enthusiasm that id were releasing Quake Live - an ad supported version of Quake 3 Arena that will run from your browser. Now their dream is a reality as the Quake Live beta programme has been opened to the public! Only downside is the amount of time you spend waiting to play - since it's only on their servers you have to wait in a queue; as I write this I'm currently in position 22567 of said queue. Time to make a cup of tea I guess!
If one new Quake game wasn't enough, then XBox 360 players can also look forward to the original Quake being released on the XBLA sometime this year.
UPDATE: I sat through their queue system for 1 hour 30 minutes just to find that after downloading the application I'd have to queue again before I could play it. I think it would have been better if they'd put the installer on a number of servers like CNet, etc. and then just have the queue for playing!
UPDATE 2: I first joined the queue at 16:50 GMT... it's now 21:10, and still no where near being able to try it out (position 6114). If this keeps up much longer I probably won't get to play it now until tomorrow! Once I do get on there and playing I'll make sure I get a review posted here and on "Musings of a Developer". Hopefully once it's out of Beta they'll have more servers and fewer queues.
UPDATE 3: You can now read my review of Quake Live, though I may add screenshots to it and a bit more detail after I try it again tonight.
