One of the big things missing from the iPhone (other than the ever elusive copy and paste) is proper support for reading eBooks. There have been rumours for a couple of weeks suggesting that Amazon could be working on a Kindle application for the iPhone. Well that rumour turns out to be true - Amazon have released today a free application (link goes to the AppStore) that will allow you to read books purchased from the Amazon Kindle store on your iPhone.
The only downside is you can't buy books directly from the application, you have to use Safari to do that instead - but it's not exactly a big problem. It sounds like Amazon might be shooting themselves in the foot by allowing people to view the books on the iPhone as it'll mean people won't buy Kindles any more - they don't see this as a problem though. Amazon see this application as a way of reaching out to a bigger audience and to allow those who own both a Kindle and an iPhone to read their book even when they've got their iPhone on them but not their Kindle. They believe it should also help boost book sales to people who don't own a Kindle, and maybe even help boost sales of the Kindle.
There have been other ways of viewing eBooks on the iPhone such as Shortcovers and Google's own offering, but it is likely that unless Google make a push to make theirs more mainstream it will be the Kindle app that will win out here.
Again though it seems Amazon don't care about the rest of the world - just as the Kindle is only available in the US, so is the iPhone application.
