From August 1st 2009 people who are on the O2 in the United Kingdom will be able to use Twitter's SMS updates free of charge. What this means is that and @replies or Direct Messages sent to you will be received as an SMS message for free. I think this is good news that companies are sitting up and taking notice of the changing way in which people are communicating and they want to be a part of it.
Vodafone UK already started this back in March as has various US and Canadian carriers. I would imagine that it won't be too long before other mobile phone networks follow suit.
