XBox 360 gets social

Today witnessed the release of a new batch of features for the XBox 360 that expanded it to allow users to interact with Twitter, Facebook, Last.fm and Zune Video. To make this clear, it's advertised as an update but it isn't really - they are downloadable applications that run just the same as any other game on your XBox360. This also means that to download and use any of the features you have to locate them in the menus under "My Community", the Video Channel, and the Music Channel.

I find the integration of Last.fm, Facebook and Twitter to be extremely poor at best. If you want to listen to music from Last.fm then that is all you can do - you can't go off and play a game or mess around on Twitter with it still playing like you can with music from the Media Library. With Facebook and especially Twitter the most useful feature I think they could have had would have been to send updates to them of when you get an achievement or to update your status with what game you're playing. Even the ability to tweet whilst playing a game by using the Xbox menu wouldn't have gone amiss, but without any of these features present I can't see me using any of these new features much.

It is a shame, on paper these ideas seemed great and I was looking forward to trying them. Now that I've got them they seem pointless and poorly implemented, even though the interfaces look nice.
