Using Text as a Mask in Photoshop

Bruce McGoose says: I was looking for a way to do this today, and the least destructive easy method I found, was to create a layer mask on the image to be masked.

create a text layer
right click that layer and make a work path..
then in paths, right click that path and make a selection..

go to the layer mask
(invert selection if needed)
and paint your black/white/whatever in the selection.

Coding Efficiency (Big Oh)

cs hermit says: In your nested loop example I believe the inner loop will run n times, with the last value of j being n-1. This is because your starting index is 0 for both loops. Breaking down the inner loop it will be run 0 for i = 0, 1 for i = 1, 2 for i = 2... to n times for i = n (executing from 0 to n-1). This equals the sum for i = 0 to n of i which can be solved to n(n+1)/2 not n(n-1)/2. In the scheme of things this subtly will not affect the big-oh. I just wanted to point out one of the intricacies of zero based indexing. Good article otherwise, well written on a very very difficult aspect of computer science.

Facebook buys FriendFeed

Lena says: My assumption is this is a play for facebook to aggregate more in the newsfeed, and a slight to twitter in light of their rejected fb buyout a few months ago. Apps are useless to developers now that they've been hidden behind a tab and I think many sites have moved onto fbConnect as a consequence. While I found FriendFeed to be guilty of over-aggregation, I feel like pulling that mess into facebook might actually start to balance that out.

I think avid users of friendfeed are liable to be disappointed in the final outcome of this merger.

Aside: I'd love for my flickr photos to post to fb without a stupid app. Hopefully this will solve for that ;)

Windows 7 without a brower

Jamie says: The way I see it people who build their own systems will be able to acquire their own web browser easily. Those who buy their computers ready to go from places like PC World will likely find it has IE8 pre-installed for them, and perhaps an alternative like Mozilla Firefox as well.

The problem now though becomes which browser vendor has the money to pay for the prime spot on these machines? Judging by Opera's response on CNet over this issue, it's not them. Which probably takes us back to square one again anyway. :)

UK Government says Broadband for all

Lena says: I'm not sure that it's subsidized at all here in the states. I think what happened was that there were subsidies in place to lay the networks years ago and regulations requiring telecom companies to share their infrastructure with the competition, so pricing is a little more competitive. Despite this most rural areas have limited access, so part of Obama's recent stimulus bill includes funding for that.

Meanwhile, everytime I use my laptop someone that there isn't free wifi, I can't help but feel like we should be there by now :P

Maximising your audience

Cassandra says: I'm concerned since shopping sites (like Target.com?) faced lawsuit. And if it's to be device independent, i'd have no idea if they are using a screen reader that supports JS (or if they can turn it off??) or a device that other than screen reader. So I don't know how far do I need go, to ensure JS disabled be accessible? To point where user can place an order, or just browse? If it's a legal requirement, I'm not sure what is meant by not an enforced law at present? Does it mean, it *could* become enforced at the whim of whomever at anytime? So wouldn't that spell trouble? Or basically...how do I cover my own & my friend's butt?

Go to touchup, blur, gaussian blur and all that stuff, but instead of creating a new layer, i have to click free hand paint, then i click other options, and set its transparency to about 50, then very carefully draw it around the white core.
Creating Anti-Spam Forms

David Spiral says: Hi there,
I've had a good look over your script, and for what you're trying to achieve, it's pretty good. I went with an even simpler idea that doesn't require the user to type anything in at all, just select the 'unique image' from those presented. I don't claim it's the most secure or unassailable system in the world, but I do claim it's one of the easiest for legitimate users to make use of!

If anyone is interested in having a look, head on over to http://spiralout.org/blog/2008/06/10/anti-spam-human-checker-php-script/

PHOENIX says: They made a good choice in not using the suit by Brandon Perlow. The suit does look slighty effemanite. No offence to Perlow, but if you're going to remake a comic book icon, you don't want to change the features that make that icon who he is. Stick to almost the exact same features as the orignial, with only minor adjustments. Good examples of this principle are in movies such as "Ironman" 08 release(the custom they did choose),"Spiderman", and "Batman Begins".

Caching PHP pages

David G. Paul says: good point Mescalchin - user's would also need to consider what to do if the file was locked when attempting to write to it as the most recent attempt to write will usually be the most up to date one so it may need to wait until it has been released - it also can't wait too long otherwise it will cause the script to be unresponsive. Also users should check whether flock() would work on their file system as it doesn't work on all, and one mode doesn't work on Windows servers

Creating DOM Elements in IE

Dave says: Actually, for all its flaws, I think IE is right in this situation. Setting a submit button's value has been the only way I've seen the text changed, and is pretty standard across browsers. I believe that this is because elements of type input are "closed" (which means you can't nest other elements inside them). This means, by definition, an input shouldn't have any innerHTML to set. Wow, never thought I'd be defending IE...

MooTools versus Script.aculo.us

David G. Paul says: Hi,

Sorry, at the time of writing the effects were done based on what they did "straight out of the box".

Scriptaculous can do the pulsate effect just by doing, Effect.Pulsate('id-of-element') - whereas at the time of writing mooTools did not have anything built in to do that which meant finding some code on the 'net that someones written as an extension, or writing your own.

I do totally agree though that mooTools is designed to be more abstract, I was trying to aim this article more at users that have not used a framework before and may be relatively new to JavaScript and so tried to take the article from their perspective. You're absolutely right though, from a more advanced users point of view like the first poster, mooTools would probably be better as it is lighter weight and so isn't going to have so much of the "fluff" that prototype/scriptaculous has that is unlikely to be used.

I might at some point in the future write an article on using and extending mooTools, and how to use it to get some of the functions that Scriptaculous has. I'm also planning on writing a jQuery one very soon.

David G. Paul says: actually the code I wrote I did using Prototype, which is where the $ function came from rather than mooTools.

Anonymous says: I'll second the previous comment.
What do you need for scriptaculous's "Pulsate" effect? You need to increase the brightness of the object, decrease it, increase it... you know, I'll do that as a class (with a "from" and a "number" attribute! :)) and post back here.

MooTools versus Script.aculo.us

Anonymous says: Thank you for the helpful review. Some thoughts: I'm quite sure that mootools at this time can do many if not all of the effects listed in the effects comparison. It may be, however, that mootools does not include specific functions for effects that can be produced using more basic functions. The purpose of mootools is to be as compact and abstract as possible -- to avoid redundancy in function definitions, etc. That said, I often have a very hard time getting mootools to work -- it has a very steep learning curve and assumes a deep understanding of class-based object oriented programming. For beginning and intermediate scripters, then, scriptaculous is probably a better choice.

jQuery updated

Anonymous says: Hi David. First, I realized that I didn't provide my name in my last post. That?s rude of me and I apologize for that. My name is Rey Bango and again, I'm with the jQuery project. It?s my pleasure to meet you.

Next, I want to assure you that I'm by no means offended. If anything, I want to ensure that if a person has any concerns about jQuery, that they get the information and attention they need to be successful. The jQuery project truly has a strong commitment to user satisfaction and we do our best to help developers get the most out of the library.

The code that you mentioned uses a technique called ?chaining? (I?m sure you?re familiar with it) and it isn?t a requirement for successful use of the jQuery library. It?s a very nice and widely adopted functionality that allows you to minimize your code by chaining methods that affect a specific object or objects. Chaining can be found in almost every major JavaScript library including Ext, Prototype, MooTools and Dojo and is actively promoted as a development method by these libraries. I ask that you look at this link from the Prototype site, which explicitly promotes chaining because of its convenience:

http://www.prototypejs.org/learn/extensions

With a rather long set of chained methods, I can certainly see your point about debugging being a concern, something that would be equally shared if using any library that supported chained methods. With that said, there?s certainly nothing that would prevent you from making the code a bit more procedural in nature. The chaining is just there for convenience.

I would ask that you take a second look at jQuery as you might be very surprised at its capabilities and impressed with the user community. And if you do come by, please let me know so that I can ensure you get the right answers to your questions.

jQuery updated

David G. Paul says: Sorry for the lack of an explanation. I think my preference for Prototype over jQuery comes from a few things, mostly down to how I've seen other developers use it compared to my own personal preference for coding styles. The following examples is one of your own, and is for the most part what I'm not too keen on - the stringing together of so much.

$("a")
   .filter(".clickme")
     .click(function(){
       alert("You are now leaving the site.");
     })
   .end()
   .filter(".hideme")
     .click(function(){
       $(this).hide();
       return false;
     })
   .end();

Whilst it certainly has it's uses, and I'm sure one day I may end up using it for something myself too - I find the above code is one that can be difficult when needing to be debugged since you have to start breaking it up to find out where it's gone wrong.

Obviously the above code will work, but hopefully you can suggest a way of easily debugging code in such cases when it doesn't.

Sorry if the post offended you, it certainly wasn't meant to.

Anonymous says: Hi David. Being part of the jQuery project team, I'm always concerned about these types of vague posts and would certainly be interested in what concerns you have about the jQuery library. Since you're recommending folks not to consider it, I'd like to understand the rationale behind your suggestions. And of course, if you've had specific trouble in working with the library, I'd like to see how we can help.

Considering that we have one of the most vibrant and supportive communities of any open source framework, I'm surprised that you've had trouble getting a grip on it, especially since the majority of jQuery users I've chatted with are ProtoType converts.

I look forward to your feedback.

The point with the in-line css. It's a directive by Prototype and Scriptaculous.

I could use the hkSlideshow class to hide them itself. But imagine the user has JavaScript disabled? He would get massive images and the layout will be deformed.

David G. Paul says: Well according to apple it was April 22nd I bought it - freaky. That means it's almost 11 months!

I'd imagine if yours eventually goes dodgy too they'll have no problem replacing it. In the support forum on Apple's site there are hundreds of people that had the same problem, weird thing is though is that they usually replace the logic board instead of just the fan. There are some that have had this problem multiple times too. :(

By the way nice choice getting one though, until now it's been a great notebook, and I hope you enjoy yours too!

Ajax Loading Indicators

David G. Paul says: I've had a go with FeedReader, and the only thing I can think of is that maybe you have it set to "Intelliupdate" which for some reason might not update as often as it should.

From http://www.feedreader.com/node/289:

"Intelliupdate tries to do it. For example if there is only one new article in few days in some feed, there is no point of polling this feed every 10 minutes. And for example if there are new items every 10 minutes then Feedreader polls for new items every 10 minutes."

Since there are some occassions where I don't update for a couple of days FeedReader is likely to assume it doesn't need to check again for a few days.

Hope this helps!

Ajax Loading Indicators

David G. Paul says: Hi Sourja,

Thanks for your comments, I've taken a look at the feed and found it was getting content not just from news posts, but also from articles.

I've now split these down so that the news as normal is fed from:

http://www.newearthonline.co.uk/pages/feed.php

and the articles from:

http://www.newearthonline.co.uk/pages/feed.php&topic=articles

I'm not sure at the minute why the feeds turn up late, I'm going to try using FeedReader myself and see what I can find out - it could be the last modified date isn't correct.

Thanks a lot for the heads up there, I'll try and find what causes FeedReader to treat my feed differently to others and get back to you as soon as possible. So far I've not been able to replicate it in other feed readers (such as Firefox, or Vienna on the Mac).

Regards,

David G. Paul

Anonymous says: Hi David,
    This is Sourjya from Chaos Lab (http://chaos-laboratory.com). I thought I should inform you that there seems to be some sort of problem with your RSS Feed. I'm subscribed to your feed through the software called FeedReader and feeds from all other sources turn up in time.. except for New Earth Online. More often than not, your feeds appears 4-5days late and that too NOT in order. Say, I'd receive one of your recent posts and one post from 3-4 days back. This hasn't happened just once - it invariable happens everytime.

A lot of times, if I find some new feed interesting and drop by your site to check it out I'm unable to find the post on the front page - coz by then you're made some more posts and that particular article has moved out to some other page.

It might be some problem with my feed reader - but then it should act the same with all other sources too, right? So you might want to take a look and see if your feed mechanism is actually in perfect order.

Best Regards,
Sourjya

Creating Anti-Spam Forms

David G. Paul says: As I said, it's one possible method which I did say in the last paragraph won't work against all of them, and it's one that is easy to do. There are places where you see other visual methods that are more complicated, where the characters are obscured - but in most cases a computer can read these better than a human.

A possibly better way is to use a simple question to verify they are human, such as "What colour is the sky?" - it is true that a bot could also be trained to answer these, but it is less likely. There is also the problem that not every "simple" question would be as easy as assumed.

David G. What's being demonstrated here is how such a feature could be bolted on, not really how to integrate it with whatever the existing login system is - it just assumes there is a way of retrieving whether or not the visitor is a logged in user.
Using Windows Integrated Authentication

Anonymous says: Hi,

I have followed the instructions detailed in your article but am experiencing some problems in getting silent authentication to work.

Using "Integrated Windows Authentication" my browser will timeout to a "page cannot be displayed screen". However if I remove the site from my browser's trusted sites list I am prompted for credentials, if I enter a valid username and password I am able to log in.

My server is running Windows 2003, Exchange and is a domain controller. Recently service pack 1 was removed from the server, could this be causing problems?

My company have stated that they would be willing to hire an experienced professional such as yourself for a few days consultancy if you feel that you can provide a solution.

Anonymous says: Thanks for your comments.

However, I been trying a number of techniques to get the UTF8 encoded string into the HTML output.

This is even trying to use the IE6 example on ha.ckers.org:
---------------------------
');
---------------------------
http://localhost/?t=%5Cx3c
http://localhost/?t=\x3c
http://localhost/?t=\\x3c
http://localhost/?t=
http://localhost/?t=%26#X3C;
http://localhost/?t=%26%23X3C%3B
---------------------------

But even in IE6, I cannot seem to find a way to turn it into an tag.
